Nebraska Car Leasing Options
Car leasing is a subject that can bring out some serious reaction on both sides of the discussion. We'll try to lay to rest some of the myths and realities behind car leasing.
What is Car Leasing?
Car leasing can best be described as "renting" a vehicle rather than purchasing it outright. The early and intermediate loan effects are the same; you are driving a nice car of your choosing and making regular payments to a bank for the purpose. The end game of car leasing is different than a purchase, however, in that you never end up owing a car that you are leasing. Leasing contracts usually last for 3 years but may last longer if you enjoy the vehicle.
The Advantages of Leasing
The primary advantage of leasing is that you avoid the depreciation hit for a new vehicle once you drive it off the lot since a leased vehicle is one that you will never sell. Another benefit is the near-constant ability to upgrade your car to something else that is new or fresh-off-the-lot for your driving pleasure. Alternatively, those that purchase an auto on the standard 5-year auto loan will be stuck with their car and whatever condition it is in once that 5 years is up.
Finally, a third benefit to leasing an automobile as opposed to purchasing it is that the car warranty is often valid for the entire time you drive the car, possibly saving you from having to manage costly repairs. These savings can add up over time, but there are downsides to car leasing.
The Disadvantages to Leasing
While the advantages to leasing a vehicle may seem formidable, there are also significant disadvantages to keep in mind. The primary disadvantage to a car lease is that it pretty much means an eternal car-payment. While buying a car through a traditional loan, does mean a depreciation hit and being done with payments with what is now a late-model vehicle, at least your payments are finished and the vehicle is yours for as long as you choose to keep it. The monthly savings on a car payment can be substantial, however, and even put toward a future car in order to get a lower payment and quicker ownership.
Another downside to leasing a vehicle is the mileage cap that is placed on each leasing contract. If you drive a lot or plan long trips in your vehicle, you may want to reconsider a lease because if you exceed the yearly mileage cap you will suffer a fairly severe financial penalty. Not only that but the period of driving after the mileage cap will put you in the position of having to pay for the repairs - instead of the warranty handling those repairs.
